Danish airline Primera Air is to launch non-stop transatlantic routes from both Birmingham and London Stansted airports to the USA, it has been announced.

Destinations include Boston and New York Newark from both UK airports, with a third US destination due to be announced later this year.

The airline will take delivery of new Airbus A321neo aircraft early next year which will facilitate the new routes.

At present there is little competition on routes from Stansted to the USA, with most London-America services originating in Heathrow and Gatwick airports. Primera Air becomes the first airline to fly to the USA from Stansted in nine years.

Andrew Cowan, London Stansted’s Chief Executive, said: “The welcome arrival of Primera Air to Stansted offers passengers even more choice and provides great new transatlantic connections to New York and Boston – both of which are important destinations for businesses in our catchment. I’m sure these new services will prove to be really popular and we look forward to working with Primera Air to add more routes in the future.”

Birmingham also has a lack of US links, with United Airlines pulling out of its New York route this year.

Flights will start in April 2018, and go on sale today at https://primeraair.com/
