Spotting at Kuala Lumpur Airport

Kuala Lumpur’s modern new airport (KLIA) luckily provides very acceptable facilities for spotting aircraft.

In the International Terminal, follow signs for the viewing area, which is upstairs past the food court.

The large room overlooks most of the parking areas, and has views extending to both runways. It is surrounded by glass, but is usually acceptable for photography. There are seats and departures/arrivals boards provided.

You can see across to the pier, but not beyond it, which makes it difficult to see anything parked on the maintenance or cargo ramps. These can, however, be seen if you are in the remote pier departure areas.

Can you confirm that the viewing area is landside not airside?

Yes it’s landside – in the main terminal building. Follow signs for observation area.

Can you get to the viewing area without having a boarding pass? I am going to KLIA next month but to the LCC Terminal and am very worried I will not be able to get to the viewing deck which is my main reason for even going to Malaysia. Also how long does it take to get from the Main Terminal to the LCC Terminal?

Thanks for any info you can give

You can get to the viewing area in the main terminal without a boarding pass. It’s upstairs, near the food court.

I haven’t visited since the LCCT was built, but I believe it’s only around 15 mins to travel to the main terminal.

Are there any other locations around the airport or nearby the runway which are suitable for planespotting?
