I went spotting at London City Airport and found the stop to the right of the terminal buildng the best place to spot.

If you come out of the airport and turn left and follow that road to the end (quite a long way to walk, but there is a bus, cant remember the number though. Just as the road bears left to go over a bridge there is a turn off to the right leading into an industrial estate. Go into the estate and bear left under a small bridge and you emerge into a car park which is right under the approach to runway 28. This is right across a small strecth of water to the threshold.
