Summary
Düsseldorf Airport lies to the north-east of the city of Düsseldorf and serves as a major gateway for the Ruhr area and western Germany. With a strong mix of leisure, charter, regional and long-haul traffic, it offers plenty for plane spotters. Note, however, that the airport no longer regularly opens its official viewing terraces, so spotting tends to rely on perimeter paths and car-park locations rather than dedicated platforms.
What Aircraft You’ll See at Düsseldorf

Düsseldorf hosts a broad selection of airlines, making it a diverse airport for spotting. Many of Germany’s charter and leisure carriers—such as Eurowings, TUI fly Deutschland and Condor—operate frequent services to holiday destinations across Europe, generally using a mix of Airbus A320 family and Boeing 737 aircraft. Eastern European carriers are also common; airlines such as Turkish Airlines, Pegasus Airlines and SunExpress Deutschland appear regularly.
For long-haul action, you’ll spot heavy metal from carriers such as Emirates, Etihad Airways and Qatar Airways, giving a varied mix of narrow-body and wide-body aircraft. Overall, the blend of charter, regional and long-haul traffic makes Düsseldorf a rewarding stop for enthusiasts who value variety.
Some interesting airlines to look out for which often fly into Dusseldorf include: Air Anka, Fly Erbil, Iraqi Airways and TUS Airways.
Also note biz jet traffic arriving for the Cessna Citation Service Center located in the south-west corner of the airfield.

Düsseldorf features a single passenger terminal with three main piers used for departures and arrivals. To the west of the terminal lies an executive terminal and remote parking stands, while to the north-east are cargo terminals, maintenance hangars and commuter aircraft parking.
There are two parallel runways, 05L/23R and 05R/23L, oriented east-west with taxiways connecting the terminal apron and remote areas. The airport has strong ground transport links, including a dedicated SkyTrain monorail linking the terminal with the railway station. For general aviation, maintenance and biz-jet activity there are dedicated ramps separate from the main passenger aprons.

Footpath East of the Airport
With the terraces now largely closed, one of the top options is the public footpath to the east of the airport. To get there, take the SkyTrain or walk from the terminal to the station area, cross the pedestrian bridge to the car park, then follow the footpath towards the Lichtenbroicher Baggersee lake. Continue north until you reach the perimeter fence. From this spot you’ll get excellent views of aircraft landing on Runway 23L. While the distance isn’t extremely close, the angle is favourable for arrivals and you can spend a good few hours spotting here comfortably.
Northern Perimeter Path
Another good choice is to explore the path along the northern runway perimeter. Here you’ll find vantage points looking over taxiways and runway alignments—especially good for spotting departures from 05R/23L or arrivals on 23R. Access typically requires a short drive or walk from the terminal or train station. Facilities are limited, so plan accordingly.
Western Side – Spielberger Weg & Niederrheinstraße
On the western side of the airfield you’ll find locations near Spielberger Weg and Niederrheinstraße. These spots offer views of arrivals on Runway 05L/05R or departures from Runway 23L/R. Parking is available in street side bays, although the angle may vary and fences or vegetation may partially obstruct your view—so it’s worth doing a quick recce before you settle in.
Dusseldorf Hotel Accommodation for Spotters
If you prefer to stay overnight near the airport for spotting convenience, the Sheraton Düsseldorf Airport Hotel (Terminal-Ring 4, 40474 Düsseldorf) is directly connected to the terminal via a walkway. Rooms on the higher floors with numbers ending in ‘10’ offer views over the domestic ramp and distant taxiways—ideal if you want to capture movements at first light or late evening without leaving your hotel room.
Düsseldorf Airport may no longer offer the fully dedicated observation decks it once did, but it remains a top destination for plane spotters thanks to the variety of traffic and good access.

Have only been to DUS once, January 1970 on a DANAIR Elizabethan livestock freighter G-ALZO, when I was the loadmaster. It was a cold overcast day, and remember it as I saw my first Fokker F.28 there.
