At the 2025 Dubai Airshow, Emirates confirmed an order for 65 additional Boeing 777‑9 jets, raising its total firm order book for the Boeing 777X family to 270 aircraft. The deal, valued at around US $38 billion at list prices, underscores Emirates’ long-term bet on the 777X as the backbone for its future wide-body fleet.

A look at the 777X history with Emirates

Emirates has been a major proponent of the 777X from early on. Its original commitment began with an order of 150 aircraft (115 777-9s and 35 777-8s) announced in 2014. Since then, the airline has added further tranches—so the new order marks yet another significant expansion of their planned 777X fleet.

Challenges and delays

Despite the scale of the order, the 777X programme has been beset by repeated delays. First delivery was originally expected in the early 2020s, but certification and rollout have slipped. Reports now suggest the 777X will not enter service before 2027. The setbacks have included technical issues, certification delays, and production challenges—yet Emirates has maintained confidence in the programme.

Looking ahead – how it will transform Emirates’ fleet

For Emirates, the 777X represents a generational upgrade to its vast existing fleet of Boeing 777-300ERs and Airbus A380s. Once delivered, the 777-9s will enable the airline to expand capacity on key long-haul routes while improving fuel efficiency, reducing operating costs, and replacing older aircraft. The size, range and economics of the 777X align with Emirates’ hub-based model from Dubai, allowing growth across long-haul markets and flexibility in deployment. The large order also signals that Emirates sees the 777 family—and the 777X variant in particular—as central to its fleet strategy for the coming decade.

In signing this massive deal, Emirates has reaffirmed its status as Boeing’s largest customer for the 777X and reaffirmed a long-standing partnership with the manufacturer in spite of the programme’s turbulence. While the wait for the first deliveries continues, the scale of the commitment means the 777X will play a defining role in Emirates’ future operations.
