Erfurt-Weimar airport in eastern Germany is a quiet, regional airport which usually sees a mix of general aviation traffic, and summer holiday charter flights to the sun.
In recent times, thanks to Covid-19, it has been a very quiet place.
However, thanks to the need to store airliners, Erfurt’s parking aprons have become home to some unusual visitors.
Erik Ritterbach recently visited Erfurt airport and sent these pictures showing the many Airbus airliners currently stored near the terminal.
They are all brand new A320 family aircraft, awaiting delivery to customers mostly in China. Carriers include Air China, Capital Airlines, China Eastern, China Southern, and Juneyao Air, plus AirAsia and Saudi Gulf Airlines.

Erfurt is also home to this immaculate former Interflug Ilyushin Il-18, preserved outside the terminal.

Spotting at Erfurt
The best and easiest place for spotting at Erfurt is the Terrace inside the old terminal building.
This gives you a view over the apron and runway beyond, and is where you can see all of the stored airliners and recreate pictures like these.
To access the terrace, go inside the passenger terminal, walk upstairs, and then head along the glass walkway to the old building.
Alternatively, to get the shot of the Il-18 as seen above, head to the top floor of the car park.
