At the 2025 Dubai Airshow, Etihad Airways announced a landmark expansion of its wide-body fleet, placing its first ever order for the Airbus A330‑900neo. The Abu Dhabi-based carrier has committed to acquiring six A330-900neos directly and leasing nine more from Avolon, bringing the total A330neo commitment to 15 aircraft. Deliveries are scheduled to begin in 2027.
This move represents a major shift in Etihad’s strategy, which until now has relied primarily on Boeing wide-body types. By embracing the A330neo family, the airline is signalling confidence in Airbus’s latest large-jet technology and its suitability for long-haul operations from Abu Dhabi.
Simultaneously, Etihad also revealed orders for seven additional Airbus A350‑1000 aircraft — bringing its total A350-1000 commitment to 27 — and three new A350F freighters, reinforcing its strengthening cargo business.
Etihad emphasises that the A330neo was chosen for a combination of performance, availability of delivery slots and operational flexibility. With the airline’s growth ambitions targeting some 200 aircraft, the new fleet order is a key pillar of its long-haul expansion.
In summary, Etihad’s order at the Dubai Airshow marks the beginning of its Airbus wide-body era. For observers and industry watchers, the transition into A330neos (alongside a beefed-up A350 order) shows how Etihad intends to modernise its fleet, boost capacity and position itself strongly for the next decade of global aviation.
