What Happened to Monarch’s Aircraft Fleet?

by Matt Falcus

A year on since the sad demise of Monarch, one of the UK’s oldest independent airlines with a proud history of flying scheduled and leisure flights, we wondered what happened to its fleet once the dust had settled?

At the time of its closure on 2 October 2017, Monarch operated a mixed fleet of Airbus A320, A321 and A330 aircraft, plus a single Boeing 737-800.

Following dispersal back to their leasing companies or storage airports, all have now been sold on to other airlines. So we thought we’d take a look at where they are now…

Had Monarch still been operating today, it would have seen the first Boeing 737 MAX 8 aircraft from a large order delivered and in service from early 2018, gradually replacing the Airbus fleet.

Many thanks for the Monarch fleet update, I had been keeping a record but had missed a few. We flew on G-ZBAT MAN/GIB 05 /09/17. My brother was a check capt with them and flew on that last fateful day.
So SORRY TO SEE THEM GO.

Great documentation Matt, which made very interesting reading. Incredibly sad to see them go. Sweet memories of hoards of whispering giants and smokey 720B’s in the 70’s, making way for the Boeing sisters in the 80’s. It’s not the same without the black ‘n’ yellows….

It was one of great airline companies operating at Faro Airport (Portugal).

It was the ZB airlines code

Maybe it isn’t a bad thing considering the new 737 Max 8 sounds dangerous from Boeing with the Mcas sensor failure !!!

Thankfully most have not been scrapped and some are even in hybrid livery with Thomas Cook. I worked on BAK, BAM, BAP, BAR and ZBX. Beautiful memories and STILL a loving workplace family even though we are no longer at the same workplace. 💛💜💛💜 RIP Monarch.

Wonderful to see two of the Monarch /Thomas cook girls yesterday – so glad at least they were saved. Hope whatever happens with TC they keep alive unlike the beautiful poor 757’s who Greybull signed the death warrants for. RIP those birds
