London Stansted Airport sold to Manchester Airport owners

by Matt Falcus

London StanstedIt has been announced that the owners of Manchester Airport have agreed to purchase London Stansted Airport.

Heathrow Airport Holdings (formerly British Airports Authority) had been ordered to sell Stansted by the Competition Commission, and at one point it looked like Ryanair would be one of those interested in purchasing the airport.

Stansted is located 40 miles north of central London, and has become a hub for low-cost carriers – in particular easyJet, Ryanair and Air Berlin. It handled over 18 million passengers in 2011, and it has also been earmarked as a location for an extra London runway, despite protests from neighbours.

Manchester Airports Group are likely to complete the deal next month, which has been quoted at £1.5bn.
