Planetags have come up with a fascinating new collection for aviation enthusiasts to enjoy.
Their latest MotoArt tags are made from the skin of an actual former Northwest Airlines McDonnell Douglas DC-10.
Intended to allow enthusiasts to collect pieces of aviation history and save memories of these aircraft before they are scrapped, the team found it difficult to find a suitable donor airplane.
They said: “Finding this particular aircraft has been challenging – only 386 DC-10s were built, and most have been lost for good.”
The DC-10 has been one the company’s most requested tags. The team was fortunate to collaborate with Charlotte Aircraft Corporation and secure the skin of N228NW as it was being scrapped at Laurinburg-Maxton Airport, NC.
The Aircraft
N228NW was a DC-10-30 and was built for Swissair in 1973, flying as HB-IHD.
Later it flew for JAT and Electra Aviation, before being sold to Northwest Airlines in 1995 to bolster their long-haul fleet.
In total, Northwest operated some 46 DC-10-30 and -40 aircraft between 1973 and 2007 when the type was retired to make way for newer Airbus A330 aircraft.
N228NW was retired in 2003 and stored at Laurinburg-Maxton airport in North Carolina.
“We made it just in time before N228NW was gone for good. When we arrived the tail was already cut down and they had stopped working on crushing this historic plane just so we could remove the fuselage skins.”
How to Buy Northwest DC-10 Plane Tags
Plane tags are sections of aircraft skin which are cut away and presented in a display card. They could be kept like that, or used as a key chain.
Each one is printed with the aircraft information, a schematic, and the limited edition number. There are only 10,000 of this tag available, with four different colour options.
If you’d like to purchase one of these unique mementos of an important aircraft, head over to the Planetags website at the link below.
There are hundreds of other tags available, too!
