Southwest buys AirTran

by Matt Falcus

In somewhat surprising news today, Southwest Airlines has announced it is in the final stages of buying AirTran, the low-cost airline based at Atlanta.

The two companies will combine operations, with all aircraft eventually emerging under the Southwest banner and livery. The new operation will see an airline with a fleet of 685 aircraft, with a mix of Boeing 737-300, -500, 700 and Boeing 717s.

Those of you in the eastern USA in particular will likely see much more of the Southwest brand as the operation combines, particularly at Atlanta and in Florida.
