Calgary-based WestJet has placed its largest-ever aircraft order, booking 67 Boeing jets in a major fleet renewal initiative stretching through to 2034. The order includes:

  • 60 Boeing 737‑10 MAX narrow‑body jets, with options for 25 more

  • 7 Boeing 787‑9 Dreamliners, plus options for 4 more

This move brings WestJet’s firm order book to a staggering 123 aircraft, with 40 additional options already locked in—making it the largest order book in Canada.

Key Details

  • Dreamliner Boost: WestJet will double its Dreamliner fleet, enhancing its long‑haul profile.

  • Younger, Greener Fleet: The carrier’s average aircraft age hovers around 10 years, and the new acquisitions—known for improved efficiency—will push that number even lower.

  • Fuel Efficiency Gains: Boeing markets the 737 MAX family as offering 20% lower fuel usage and emissions and 14% less maintenance downtime—a big win for both economics and the environment.

  • Early Deliveries: First of the 737‑10 MAX aircraft could arrive within the next few years, with Dreamliners joining soon after. Expect new arrivals well before 2034 wraps up!

  • Increased Variety: Spotters may see a sharp uptick in 787‑9 Dreamliners, a more substantial presence than before.

  • Expanding Destinations: The addition of long‑haul aircraft like the Dreamliner hints at richer route variety—possibly more sightings at European, Asian, and Latin American gateways.
