Switzerland is also one of Europe’s easiest countries to explore. Here are ten aviation experiences you shouldn’t miss.
1. Visit Zurich Airport’s Excellent Viewing Terraces
Few airports in Europe cater for enthusiasts as well as Zurich Airport. Its public viewing terraces provide superb elevated views of the runways, taxiways and terminals, allowing photographers to capture everything from regional jets to long-haul Airbus A350s and Boeing 777s.
Terrace B overlooks much of the main apron, while Terrace E offers close-up views of aircraft operating from the midfield satellite terminal. Interactive displays, restaurants and regular airport tours make this far more than just a spotting location—it’s a full aviation day out.

2. Explore the Swiss Museum of Transport in Lucerne

The Swiss Museum of Transport (Verkehrshaus) is one of Europe’s finest transport museums and a must-visit for aviation enthusiasts.
Its aviation hall charts the history of Swiss flying through an impressive collection of military, civil and general aviation aircraft. Historic Swissair aircraft sit alongside helicopters, gliders and interactive exhibits that explain how aviation has developed over the last century.
Allow several hours—you could easily spend a full day here.
3. Watch Airliners and Business Jets at Geneva Airport
There’s always a good mix of traffic at Geneva Airport
Geneva Airport offers something slightly different from Zurich.
Alongside scheduled flights from airlines across Europe, Africa and the Middle East, Geneva is one of Europe’s busiest centres for business aviation. During the winter ski season the airport becomes especially busy as private jets arrive carrying visitors to the Alps.
With plenty of movements throughout the day and excellent photographic opportunities, it’s an airport that rarely disappoints.
4. Photograph Runway 34 at Zurich Airport

One of Zurich’s best-known spotting locations lies beside Runway 34.
Aircraft pass overhead at remarkably low altitude on approach, creating spectacular photography opportunities with the surrounding countryside providing an attractive backdrop.
An added bonus is the collection of preserved aircraft inside and in the grounds, including an Ilyushin Il-14.
5. Visit Buochs Airfield – Home of Pilatus Aircraft
No aviation trip to Switzerland would be complete without visiting Buochs Airfield near Stans.
This is where Pilatus Aircraft designs and builds its internationally renowned PC-12, PC-24 and military training aircraft. Depending on activity levels, visitors may be lucky enough to see production aircraft undertaking test flights alongside customer deliveries.
You can see aircraft coming and going easily from the roads around the airfield, and the mountain backdrop is stunning!
6. Discover the Flieger Flab Museum at Dübendorf
Located beside historic Dübendorf Air Base, the Flieger Flab Museum tells the story of Swiss military aviation.
The collection includes aircraft ranging from early piston-engined fighters through Cold War jets to more modern types, together with anti-aircraft equipment, radar systems and displays explaining Switzerland’s unique approach to national defence.
Many exhibits are beautifully restored and displayed indoors, making this an excellent all-weather attraction.
7. Visit Clin d’Ailes at Payerne

The Clin d’Ailes Museum, located alongside Payerne Air Base, focuses on Switzerland’s jet age.
Its collection includes classic Swiss Air Force aircraft such as the Hawker Hunter, Dassault Mirage III and Northrop F-5 Tiger, many displayed in immaculate condition.
The museum regularly hosts special exhibitions and events, while aircraft movements from the active air base nearby add extra interest during a visit.
8. Experience EBACE at Geneva
If your visit coincides with EBACE (European Business Aviation Convention & Exhibition), you’re in for a real treat.
For a few days each year Geneva becomes the centre of the global business aviation industry, with dozens of brand-new business jets from manufacturers including Gulfstream, Bombardier, Dassnault and Embraer gathering on the airport apron.
For anyone interested in executive aviation, there are few better opportunities anywhere in Europe.
9. Spend Time at Sion Airport

Nestled among the Alps, Sion Airport is one of Europe’s most scenic aviation locations.
The airport handles scheduled flights, charter services, helicopters and a surprising variety of business aircraft, while also sharing facilities with the Swiss Air Force.
Against a backdrop of dramatic mountain peaks, almost every aircraft movement makes for an unforgettable photograph.
10. See Swiss Military Aviation at Dübendorf Air Base

Although no longer a major frontline military base, Dübendorf remains one of Switzerland’s most historically significant airfields.
Today it hosts military units, specialist aviation organisations and regular flying activity, while its long history makes it an essential stop for anyone interested in Swiss aviation.
Combined with the neighbouring Flieger Flab Museum, it offers one of the country’s richest aviation experiences.
