1. New York John F. Kennedy International (JFK)

Few airports can match the international variety found at JFK. Serving as New York City’s primary international gateway, it attracts airlines from almost every continent, making it one of the best places in the world to see colourful long-haul aircraft.
Expect everything from Airbus A350s and A380s to Boeing 747 freighters, 777s and 787 Dreamliners. Spotters particularly enjoy Bayswater Point and North Woodmere Park, both of which offer excellent views depending on runway use.
2. Atlanta Hartsfield-Jackson International (ATL)
The world’s busiest airport by aircraft movements offers almost non-stop action throughout the day. Delta Air Lines dominates proceedings with an endless stream of Airbus and Boeing aircraft, while every major US airline is represented.
The airport’s superb Renaissance Concourse Hotel is probably the best in the world for spotting. Get a room with a balcony and watch arrivals and departures all day and night. It’s the only really good spotting location in Atlanta.
3. Anchorage Ted Stevens International (ANC)

Anchorage is unlike any other airport in North America. While passenger traffic is relatively modest, its strategic location between Asia and North America has made it one of the world’s busiest cargo airports.
FedEx, UPS, Atlas Air, Kalitta Air, Cargolux and countless international freighter operators appear daily, often alongside passenger aircraft from Alaska Airlines, Delta and international carriers. If you enjoy cargo aircraft, nowhere in the USA compares.
4. Miami International (MIA)
Miami combines excellent international diversity with a distinctly Latin American flavour. Airlines from across Central and South America mix with European, Caribbean and North American operators, creating one of the continent’s most colourful airport line-ups.
Widebody aircraft remain common here, while American Airlines operates one of its largest hubs. The airport’s perimeter roads and dedicated viewing areas provide numerous opportunities for photography.
5. Los Angeles International (LAX)
For many enthusiasts, LAX is simply aviation paradise.
The airport welcomes airlines from every corner of the globe, with almost every major aircraft type making regular appearances. A380s, 747 freighters, Dreamliners, A350s and countless narrowbodies keep movements varied throughout the day.
The famous In-N-Out Burger park beside runway 24R has become one of the world’s best-known spotting locations, where arriving aircraft pass spectacularly low overhead.
6. Chicago O’Hare International (ORD)
Chicago O’Hare combines sheer scale with incredible variety. As major hubs for both United Airlines and American Airlines, almost every domestic aircraft type can be seen, alongside dozens of international carriers.
Its multiple parallel runways keep movements constant, while dedicated viewing areas and accessible perimeter roads offer excellent photography opportunities. Cargo operators add even more interest after dark.
7. Dallas/Fort Worth International (DFW)

One of the largest airports in the world, Dallas/Fort Worth is the heart of American Airlines’ global network.
Spotters can enjoy hundreds of daily American Airlines movements, alongside international visitors from Europe, Asia, Oceania and Latin America. Founders’ Plaza remains one of America’s finest official viewing parks, complete with elevated views, aircraft information and live air traffic control audio.
8. Wittman Regional Airport (OSH)
For most of the year Oshkosh is a quiet regional airport in Wisconsin. For one extraordinary week each July, however, it becomes the centre of the aviation universe during EAA AirVenture.
Thousands of aircraft descend on the airport, ranging from homebuilt aircraft and vintage warbirds to military jets, airliners and aerobatic performers. There is simply nowhere else quite like it, and every aviation enthusiast should experience Oshkosh at least once.
9. San Francisco International (SFO)
With the spectacular backdrop of San Francisco Bay, SFO offers some of the most photogenic spotting opportunities in America.
United Airlines operates a major hub here, complemented by strong international services across the Pacific and to Europe. The famous observation area at Bayfront Park provides excellent views of arrivals, while the airport’s unique parallel runway operations create fascinating photography opportunities.
10. Seattle Boeing Field (BFI)
Seattle’s Boeing Field isn’t America’s busiest airport—but it may be one of its most fascinating.
Located beside Boeing’s production facilities, the airport regularly hosts newly built 737 MAX aircraft undergoing test flights before delivery to airlines around the world. Alongside these factory movements you’ll find military visitors, corporate jets, classic aircraft from the nearby Museum of Flight and occasional Boeing widebody test aircraft.
