One of the best spotting locations at Madrid Airport is in a central location between the original terminals 1, 2 and 3, and the newer Terminal 4 to the north.
There are actually two locations here – one known as the Mound, and another next to the nearby cemetery.
You have a view of aircraft taxiing by, using the runways, and the line-up of Iberia aircraft parked at Terminal 4.
Â
Directions
You can reach the Mound by public transport if you take the Metro to Barajas, the small town adjacent to the airport. Once there, walk over the white bridge past the restaurant on the left.
If you have a car, follow the M-14 road north, past terminals 1, 2 and 3. Then, after passing under a tunnel, turn left where signposted ‘Service Zone’. Turn left towards the cemetery, then right along a road which leads to a dead end. This is where to spot.

Erik Ritterbach sent us these pictures from the latter position, which I’m sure you’ll agree are fantastic – especially when combined with the sunny weather!

The mound is excellent, just take a hat, sun block and water, there is no protection from the sun and no facilities close by.
