Austria may not be one of Europe’s busiest aviation markets, but it offers some truly rewarding airports for plane spotters. With Austrian Airlines and its subsidiaries dominating scheduled traffic, seasonal ski charters bringing in all kinds of airlines during the winter, and some of the most scenic backdrops anywhere in the world, it’s a country that deserves a place on your spotting list.

Here are some of the best airports and locations for enthusiasts.

Vienna is Austria’s main hub and the base of Austrian Airlines, as well as carriers like Lauda Europe, Wizz Air, Eurowings, and easyJet. Long-haul services bring in widebodies from Air China, ANA, EVA Air, Qatar Airways, and more, while the cargo scene is strong with carriers like FedEx, Cargolux, Korean Air Cargo, and Turkish Airlines Cargo.

The official viewing terrace at Vienna Airport is now free. The reason is that about 60% of the view has been blocked by the erection of a taller building in front of it. What is left offers a severely restricted view and is of only limited use especially if the sun is shining as you are photographing into the sun for much of the day. Car Parks are only real option but much better to get a car and find approach options based on runway being used.
