Southwest Airlines has revealed a striking new special livery aircraft, marking a major milestone in American history while adding another eye-catching jet for aviation enthusiasts to track.
A Special Livery For A Historic Anniversary
Unveiled on 27 April 2026, the new aircraft—named “Independence One”—celebrates the 250th anniversary of the signing of the Declaration of Independence in the United States.
The aircraft is a Boeing 737 MAX 8, carrying the registration N1776R, a fitting nod to the year 1776 when the Declaration was signed.
Southwest has partnered with the America250 initiative, positioning the aircraft as a flying tribute that will take part in celebrations and events throughout the anniversary year.
It is anticipated to be part of the lineup at EAA Airventure Oshkosh this July.
A Bold And Symbolic Design
The livery is one of the most elaborate ever applied to a Southwest aircraft, featuring a patriotic red, white, and blue colour scheme with several symbolic details:
Large “1776” quill-style script across the fuselage
The famous phrase: “Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness”
13 stars representing the original colonies
A circular star motif on the engine cowlings inspired by the Betsy Ross flag
America250 branding on the nose and winglets
Even the aircraft’s registration—N1776R—continues the theme, echoing historic commemorative liveries from past anniversaries.
Entering Service
“Independence One” is not just a showpiece. The aircraft is scheduled to enter regular passenger service from 29 April 2026, with its inaugural flight linking Dallas and Philadelphia—two cities deeply connected to American history.
Like other special liveries in the Southwest fleet, it will operate normal routes while also appearing at events tied to the anniversary celebrations.

Joining A Growing Special Fleet
The new jet joins a growing collection of themed aircraft at Southwest, including:
“Freedom One” (introduced in 2021)
“Liberty One” (also unveiled in 2026 with a US flag design)
All three aircraft reflect the airline’s focus on national identity and storytelling through its liveries—something that has become increasingly popular with enthusiasts and plane spotters.
Southwest’s fleet also includes many special liveries marking different US states.
