Boeing and Copa Airlines have announced a major new aircraft order that will see the Latin American carrier significantly expand and modernise its fleet with the latest generation Boeing 737 MAX jets.

The agreement, revealed on 28 April 2026, includes a firm order for 40 aircraft with options for a further 20, taking the potential total to 60 new 737 MAX aircraft.

A Major Fleet Expansion

The new deal builds on Copa Airlines’ already substantial order book and forms part of a long-term growth strategy. When combined with aircraft already on order, the airline plans to add more than 100 new 737 MAX jets over the coming years.

This expansion could see the airline’s fleet grow to over 200 aircraft by 2034, marking a significant increase in capacity for one of Latin America’s most efficient carriers.

Deliveries of the newly ordered aircraft are expected to take place between 2030 and 2034, allowing flexibility for both expansion and replacement of older jets.

Copa Airlines is one of the world’s most committed Boeing operators, already flying more than 110 aircraft from the 737 family, including Next Generation and MAX variants.

The airline will continue to rely exclusively on the 737 platform, benefiting from:

  • Fleet commonality and simplified maintenance
  • Lower training requirements for crews
  • Operational efficiency across its network

The new aircraft will likely include a mix of 737-8, 737-9, and potentially 737-10 variants, depending on operational needs.

Supporting Growth from Panama

A key focus of the order is strengthening Copa’s hub operations at Panama City, known as the “Hub of the Americas.”

From this strategically located hub, the airline currently connects 88 destinations in 32 countries across North, Central and South America, and the Caribbean.

The additional aircraft will enable:

  • Increased frequencies on existing routes
  • Expansion into new destinations
  • Greater connectivity across the Americas

Copa’s CEO Pedro Heilbron described the agreement as a crucial step in “strengthening the operation and connectivity” offered through its Panama hub.

The Boeing 737 MAX continues to be the backbone of many airlines’ short- and medium-haul fleets, offering improved fuel efficiency, range, and capacity compared to earlier 737 models.

For Copa, the type provides the flexibility to operate:

  • High-density short-haul routes within Latin America
  • Longer sectors to North America and the Caribbean

The aircraft’s efficiency is particularly important as airlines look to reduce operating costs while meeting growing demand across the region.

A Vote of Confidence in the Market

The order also reflects broader optimism about aviation growth in Latin America. According to Boeing’s forecasts, the region will require more than 2,300 new aircraft over the next 20 years, with single-aisle jets like the 737 MAX accounting for the vast majority.

For Boeing, the deal represents another important win as it continues to rebuild momentum in the commercial aircraft market.
