Summary
The Royal International Air Tattoo is a legendary air show which takes place in the UK every July.
It has been running since 1971, making this year’s show the 55th year of its existence.
Here’s why it’s one that you should definitely take note of if you’re an aviation enthusiast and spotter.
What is the Royal International Air Tattoo?
The Royal International Air Tattoo, or RIAT for short, is the world’s largest military air show.
It is held every July over three days, and regularly attracts display teams and static aircraft from all over the world.
Since 1993 the show has been held at RAF Fairford in Gloucestershire. This large airfield is the perfect venue, with acres of apron space for static displays, good access to the road network, and a nice long runway capable of handling all aircraft types.
What Makes RIAT Special
For aviation enthusiasts, RIAT is a chance to see aircraft and air forces that don’t usually appear in the same place at the same time.
If you’re familiar with other UK airshows, you will often see the same displays at all of them – the Royal Air Force’s Red Arrows, and the Battle of Britain Memorial Flight for example.
However, at RIAT there are usually 25+ displays on each show day comprising air forces and organisations from all over the world.

What’s more, the static line-up of aircraft also reflects this mix, with hundreds of aircraft parked along the 1-2 miles of parking areas. These cover historic, modern, civil and military types and every year is a mouthwatering mix of interesting aircraft.
Often there is a theme for each year, such as a milestone or a particular air force, and many aircraft related to that theme will turn up.

Many of the static display aircraft are also open to the public to explore and get inside, which gives a unique angle.
In all, you can expect anything from 150-350 aircraft to be present.
In addition to flying and static displays, RIAT includes many areas of trade stalls, food and drink outlets, and learning spaces often linked to science and technology education, as well as the many charities supported by the air show.
RIAT 2026

This year, the Royal International Air Tattoo takes place from 17-19 July. You can buy tickets here https://www.airtattoo.com/
The themes this year are ‘Fighter Meet’, highlighting fast jets from across the decades, with a sub-theme of ‘Royal Flight’ to mark the 30th anniversary of this airshow being granted ‘Royal’ status. As a result, aircraft related to VIP transportation and the UK’s Royal Flight squadrons are expected to participate.
RIAT, in my experience, is a really exciting airshow to experience, and much better for the enthusiast looking for unusual types or large numbers of sightings to enter the log book. The chance to get up close to aircraft with such variety is a big selling point.
There has been some concern this year that if military activities in the Middle East continue through the summer, the air show might have a muted experience, with many squadrons and aircraft deployed elsewhere. But I’m sure whatever happens, it will be a great show.
