What happened to Britannia’s Boeing 767s?

by Matt Falcus

The much-loved holiday airline, Britannia Airways, which existed in one form or another from the 1960s until the name disappeared into the TUI group in the early 2000s, was a big part of the daily scene at many UK and European airports.

Starting out with piston Lockheed Constellation airliners, Britannia soon became the first airline in the UK to fly the Boeing 737. It grew this fleet of 737-200 models to many examples.

To cope with high demand routes on it’s important leisure routes, Britannia bought a fleet of widebody Boeing 767 aircraft with high capacity.

Initially flying the 767-200 model, they would later add the -300.

The 767s were also common on long haul services to the Africa, the USA, Caribbean and Asia.

Britannia continued to use its Boeing 767s, but eventually retired most of the earlier, smaller -200 models in favour of the larger -300s, and its large Boeing 757 fleet.

Eventually Britannia would come under the TUI Group and be rebranded.

Today, as TUI Airways’ UK division, a couple of the Boeing 767-300s are still in use. They are, however, expected to be retired imminently as the 787 Dreamliner fleet grows.

Here’s a fleet list with the fate of the 767s flown by Britannia over the years.

I remember as a child the excitement of going on a B767-200 for the first time as an aircraft change from the smaller B737 to Malaga, Spain

First trip in ’86 invoked a cockpit visit and a BY 767 sticker. Many more after than… Was truly a new dimension in holiday travel.
