A great option for anyone going plane spotting in San Diego, California, is the DoubleTree Hilton Downtown hotel which has some really nice views.
John Millar recently stayed there and sent these pictures and details on the hotel.
Located on the northern edge of downtown, the DoubleTree is a tall hotel which means that those with north-facing rooms on higher floors have aircraft passing almost at eye level when approaching runway 27.
Having balconies makes this a great place for photographing aircraft, and you can read aircraft registrations (tail numbers) without the need for binoculars.
If you don’t want to spend all the time on the balcony, Flightradar24 or other tracking sites can be used.

An Alaska Airlines Boeing 737-890 Registration N565AS in Disneyland Resort – Toontown livery at San Diego International Airport
A JetBlue Airways Airbus A321-231 Registration N977JE at San Diego International Airport
John states: “There is also a good variety of biz Jets as well as most American airlines, and you can also catch Japan Airlines, British Airways, Air Canada and Lufthansa. Starting this Summer, Breeze Airways are also commencing flights. I was there in November and was able to take pics from about 0700 till 1600. I dont know if I was just fortunate but was able to catch a good number of special liveried aircraft.”
Sometimes Coastguard and Naval helicopters can also be pictured from the hotel, landing at their respective bases near San Diego airport
Hotel Amenities
As would be expected at a Hilton brand, the hotel is of good quality.
John states: “The hotel is well located for eating places as well as convenience stores to purchase food to compliment the tea/coffee making machine in the room.”
He adds that the room “is well appointed and a decent size. The hotel also offers Room Service if required.”
