Scandinavian Airlines, commonly known as SAS, is the joint national carrier of Denmark, Norway and Sweden.

A long-standing airline, having been founded in 1946, it has struggled in recent years to compete with low-cost carriers as well as long-haul and full-service airlines flying to Scandinavia’s main airports.

Despite this, the airline has a strong network and a fleet which is modernising and gaining a younger average age thanks to new aircraft types arriving. Older types like the Boeing 737 have recently been retired.

SAS utilised a number of subsidiary airlines to fly routes and feeder services on its behalf, in Scandinavia and the Republic of Ireland.

SAS Fleet Today

At present SAS has around 65 aircraft in its active, mainline fleet, which is made up entirely of Airbus products.

In addition to this, there are more than 60 aircraft active and flying on behalf of SAS in the fleets of SAS Connect, SAS Link, CityJet and Nordica subsidiary Xfly.

Retirement Plans

SAS 737

At present SAS has not announced timescales for retiring older types from its fleet. It is anticipated that the A320neo fleet will replace A320ceo and possibly A319 examples over the coming years.

SAS recently completed the retirement of its Boeing 737 fleet, converting to an all-Airbus operation in its mainline fleet, and has a number of A320neo and A350-900 aircraft on order.
