China Southern to Retire A380s by Year End

Reports from Chinese media and other news sites suggest China Southern Airlines will retire its Airbus A380s by the end of the year.

The airline already reported in early 2021 that the future of the five super jumbos in its fleet were under review following the downturn in demand owing to the Covid-19 pandemic.

Now, the airline has reportedly sealed the fate of the aircraft, planning to park, scrap or sell them before 2022 is out.

Currently the airline only seems to be operating three of its five A380s, with the other two having been parked for a number of months.

The fleet consists of:

  • B-6136 (cn 031)
  • B-6137 (cn 036)
  • B-6138 (cn 054)
  • B-6139 (cn 088)
  • B-6140 (cn 120)

This is sad news, given many airlines have reversed their decisions to end A380 operations recently.

China Southern is the only operator of the type in China, and has been flying them on services to cities like Paris, Los Angeles, Sydney and Vancouver.
