Another American Retro Livery Aircraft

by Matt Falcus

Following last month’s announcement that American Airlines has added two new heritage retro livery aircraft (see report here) celebrating PSA and Piedmont, the airline has now announced that more aircraft have just been painted up.

This time around, American is celebrating both Allegheny and US Airways that have been featured.

The process sees American marking the long lineage of airlines which have gone before it, and form part of today’s carrier either through mergers or acquisitions.

Allegheny Airlines, which began trading under that name in 1953, eventually became USAir in 1979.

US Airways was the final trading name of USAir. It was merged into American Airlines in 2015.

The two aircraft with the liveries are both Airbus A321s. They are:

N579UW (cn 6100), A321-231 – Allegheny Airlines

N578UW (cn 6035), A321-231 – US Airways

Both aircraft previously flew with US Airways, which brings this full circle for them.

A note on N578UW however – this aircraft has already been flying in this heritage livery for a number of years, and has only been repainted recently.

This is not the first time American Airlines has celebrated these former airlines in its fleet. In the past Airbus A319s N745VJ wore Allegheny Airlines colours. This aircraft has recently been painted into regular American Airlines livery, however.

With more heritage schemes featured on older aircraft, it seems likely that American will continue repainting them onto new types like the Airbus A321. Stay tuned!
