The Complete Guide to Airport Spotting Hotels

by Matt Falcus

This is our most comprehensive guide to spotting hotels for aviation enthusiasts.

Spotting-Hotels-Guide

Introduction

Aircraft spotting used to be about rolling up to an airport, finding the official viewing area, and spending some time logging and photographing whatever turned up.

Now, with most official viewing areas long banished in the name of security and commercial development, spotters are resigned to finding alternative places to watch aircraft.

One of the more interesting developments has been in finding hotels where spotters can enjoy their hobby in the comfort and safety of their own room, and continue doing so into the night thanks to in-room Wi-Fi and flight tracking websites.

The purpose of this guide is to give you a comprehensive overview of what to look for with spotting hotels and how to get the best views. It also lists the 10 best spotting hotels, and a full list of 60 hotels that you need to visit on your travels.

What Makes a Good Spotting Hotel?

Defining the what makes a good spotting hotel depends on your own motivations as a spotter.

People generally tend to fall into categories of either photographers or aircraft loggers (although usually people are both).

citizenm-amsterdam

The best spotting hotels are naturally the ones closest to the action. They will have rooms with a view of an airport, its runways, or the approach/departure path to or from the airport.

Any hotel more than a mile away will probably not be worth it unless you’re happy for a remote view and having to rely on flight tracking websites or SBS units to find out the identity of aircraft seen.

For photographers, a good spotting hotel is one that is close enough to bring aircraft in range for unobstructed pictures to be taken, ideally within a 300mm range. It would also have clean windows without a large gap between panes of glass.

Like any hotel, a good spotting hotel will be comfortable, have free Wi-Fi, and good options for food and drink. It should not be too expensive, however this is sometimes not an option when it comes to airport hotels.

How to Ensure You Get the Best Rooms

There’s nothing more frustrating than being in a spotting hotel but unable to secure a room with a view. It’s almost as bad to have a room which requires straining your neck and squinting to grab a fleeting glance of aircraft as they pass the other side of the hotel.

The perfect room has a grandstand view where you can relax on a chair, bed or balcony and watch aircraft pass you without any obstruction. It’s not always that simple, so how can you ensure you get a good room?

Renaissance Heathrow Spotting Hotel

It’s important to communicate your wishes when booking the room. There is often a space to leave requests when booking rooms online, which is a perfect opportunity to state: “I would like a room with a view of the airport/runway on a high floor, please.” You can also request a particular room number here if you know a good one.

This is another important factor. Unless you know differently, spotting hotels have the best views from the highest rooms. This takes you above the annoying distractions of trees, street lights and other buildings and gives you the best chance of seeing aircraft.

Another good tip is to call the hotel on the morning of arrival to politely ask whether you could request a room with a view of the airport. In most cases staff will helpfully try to secure this for you, and will often see your request on the booking system.

Finally, upon arrival you have another chance to request a room with a view. This is easier, as you can discuss the best options. However, by this stage you run the risk of all the best rooms being assigned to other guests – especially if you check-in late in the day.

Other Factors to Think About

When choosing which spotting hotel to book you need to also think about your other needs.

If this is simply an overnight stop before or after flying, or whilst passing through the city, it’s not so important. You may want to make sure there is a free shuttle to the airport, or long-stay parking.

However, if this hotel is going to be the base for your spotting trip you should check its proximity to other spotting locations and attractions, and whether it has public transport links.

If food in the hotel is expensive you should also check out whether there are any supermarkets or fast food chains in the local area as a place to stock up on supplies or eat cheaply.

Finally, price is another factor. Often you can’t afford higher prices if you want the best views. But if you’re staying at an airport for a longer period, you might find this too expensive and want to shop around a little. Trading off price versus views is something to think about.

The Top 10 Spotting Hotels

There are undoubtedly some places which have become synonymous with the term ‘spotting hotel’. These are the stars which spotters naturally flock to, and are in many cases better than any other spotting locations at an airport.

The best seem to be at the busiest airports around the world, as these offer quantity of aircraft as well as quality of the views. Some are also well known for facilities and climate, which add to the enjoyment.

Al Muteena St, Dubai, United Arab Emirates | +971 4 268 8888 | www.sheratondeiradubai.com

For most spotters visiting Dubai, this is the only place to consider for watching aircraft. Formerly known as the Sheraton Deira, the Grand Excelsior is a very comfortable (albeit quite pricey) hotel, but its rooftop pool area sits underneath the approach/departure path to Dubai’s runways and aircraft pass fairly low overhead throughout the day and night. Aircraft approaching are within reach of a decent camera lens.

Sonesta Maho Beach Hotel
1 Rhine Drive, Sint Maarten | +1 721 545 3100 | www.sonesta.com/mahobeach
The natural choice for spotters. Situated alongside the beach, if you take a room facing the airport the aircraft will be at the same level (or lower) as your balcony, making it a great position for photography.

South & Central America

Mexico City

Camino Real Hotel
Peñón de los Baño, Venustiano Carranza, Mexico City | +52 55 2482 2400 | www.caminoreal.com
The best spotting hotel at Mexico City. Rooms on the 7th and 8th floors facing the airport are ideal, with movements on taxiways and runways visible, as well as some of the distant maintenance ramps.

Av. Almirante Silvio de Noronha, 365 – Rio de Janeiro, RJ, 20021-010 | +55 21 3478 4100 | www.prodigysantosdumont.com.br
The newest hotel at Santos Dumont, and with the best views. The Prodigy is linked to the new terminal via a walkway from departures level. Rooms 3081-7 offer good views, and the hotel has a rooftop pool and restaurant which also have great views of aircraft at the airport.

Ibis Hotel Congonhas

A good value spotting hotel at Congonhas Airport. It is situated next to the terminal, and rooms on higher floors have a great view of all movements. A lounge on the top floor can see arrivals into Guarulhos on a good day.

Hotel Matiz Guarulhos

Hotel Matiz
R. Pedro de Tolêdo, 1000 – Jardim Santa Lidia, Guarulhos | +55 11 3411 7000 | www.matizhotelguarulhos.com
The Hotel Matiz is great for spotting, as it has a terrace which is perfect for landing shots. However, sometimes this is closed, or requires to you pay for day access if you’re not a guest. This hotel is the best option for spotting and has great views of arrivals. Aircraft can be read off from rooms facing the airport.

Melbourne

Park Royal Airport Hotel
Arrival Drive, Melbourne Airport, Melbourne, VIC 3045 | +61 3 8347 2000 | www.parkroyalhotels.com
You can walk directly into this hotel from the terminals via a covered walkway. Rooms have excellent views over the airport. Ask for those in the ranges 800-825 and 900-925. You can also get views from the ends of the corridors.

Sydney

Rydges Hotel Room Views

Rydges Sydney Airport Hotel
8 Arrival Ct, Sydney Airport, NSW 2020 | +61 2 9313 2500 | www.rydges.com
Located just behind the terminal, the Rydges has seized the opportunity of attracting spotters by providing day access to its panoramic terrace for a fee. You can see and photograph movements around the terminals and runway 16R/34L. Higher rooms facing the same direction have a similar view, and the hotel offers spotters packages which include the best views, food and drink allowance, information sheet, free Wi-Fi and a pair of binoculars!

This is such a fantastic list, thank you!
Wondering if you (or any of your readers) have ever stayed at the Radisson Blu Hotel, Zurich Airport, which is connected to the ZRH terminal? They have a “Plane Spotting – Business Class Airfield” special rate which includes ‘business class room with airfield view’, ‘access to plane spotting terrace’, and other perks (breakfast buffet, fitness center access, etc.). It sounds fantastic, but is quite pricey so I hesitate to try it out before hearing a few opinions and seeing a few photos 🙂

Hi Dory, I’ve heard about it and seen pictures, but have not tried it. It is quite expensive!

Have read through this list and find there seems to be an error for Paris CDG. Surely north facing rooms overlook terminal 3 and northern runways with terminal 1 to the left. South facing rooms for terminal 2 and south facing runways.

Your entry on the website for Los Angeles international Airport recommends the Embassy Suites LAX South but the address and location relate to Embassy Suites Ontario and Ontario Airport. Perhaps something has been corrupted in the editing.

Hello, I have to say your pick for Hong Kong is absolutely not correct. The Airport Regal Hotel overlooks the threshold and part of the terminal and offers excellent view. They offer special rates for airport views. The Marriott is too far away. I have stayed at the Airport Regal Hotel and will be again at the end of May. Note that the hotel is connected to the terminal.

Thanks for the tips Peter! Please send us a report of the Regal Hotel when you come back from your trip!

Hi Spotters
If You are into take good pictures of Gran Canaria airport (LPA), and you need accomodation, I have a holiday home in Fariones st. which is located at point #1.
The apartment offers its guests all the comforts they need in their two bedrooms, which can accommodate up to 4 people. The accomodation is a top floor, it has a balcony facing sea, and the the other side views on the final approach which can be seen from the door. You can sit and watch hidden from the sun. Noises that come from the airport are very low inside the apartment. The accomodation provides you unlimited free wifi and in the surroundings you will find all the facilities that you need as supermarkets, restaurants…

At London Heathrow LHR, I would recommend the Premier Inn at T4 as the best hotel. This newer hotel has nice new better grade windows for taking photos and a lot cheaper than Renaissance Hotel. At Renaissance Hotel, it cost more to go to the top floor. At lower floor, I find light standards and trees are in teh way and back lit in the afternoon. Windows are dirty and dark tinted, not very good for photography.

I still have to check out the Hilton Garden Inn with an open deck/bar.

For Singapore Changi SIN, the Crowne Plaza charges as much as extra SIN$40 (2019) for the room facing the tarmac. Ask for the top floor room number (odd numbers) 907-911. There is an open gap between room x07 and x09 ??) on each floor you can spot with limited view angle. So you can stay in a cheaper room and spot from this gap.

This hotel is connected to T3, for lower cost eat, go to the food court in the basement of T3. More local variety food too. There is a supermarket there. Prices are close to city price.

For LAX, I would recommend the H Hotel Los Angeles, Curio Collection by Hilton. There is a roof top viewing gallery with good view of north runway and may be too far for south runway.
